Drone Technician, (A262385-1), 208, Auto Theft Grant

A Drone Operator is responsible for controlling small unmanned aerial systems (UAS- commonly known as "drones"), while also performing a variety of technical and administrative tasks that support patrol, investigation and tactical operations.  Employee ensures that the drone is operated safely and efficiently and must follow all applicable FAA regulations. The position requires good communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions, In addition, the employee is required to successfully pass and maintain all required certifications. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Drone Operator is to pilot small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for a variety of purposes, ranging from intelligence gathering, surveillance, search and rescue to photography. 
• Responsible to for safely controlling drones and ensuring that they are used in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations 
• Must be able to accurately interpret the purpose of the individual flight mission and the information received from equipment data, visual assessment and the National Weather Service in order to make informed flight decisions and adjust flight paths accordingly.
• Must have a basic understanding of all UAS equipment in relation to maintenance and troubleshooting
• Required to continuously monitor their drones and environments closely to ensure overall airworthiness to include all weather conditions
• Continues troubleshooting of equipment, maintenance, connectivity and overall systems inspections to ensure airworthiness 
• Attends continuous development trainings and must successfully complete the course and obtain the desired certification.  Out of town travel is involved.
• Participates in court testimonies/presentations
•  Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use
• Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Effort Requirements Position will have the following exposures

Required Experience and Education

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited* college or university in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Engineering, or closely related field 
• At least one (1) year of experience in operating drones or other remote-controlled devices.

Required Licenses or Certifications 

• Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment. 

• Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA (Part 107 License)

• Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA (Part 107 License) must be obtained within 6 months of employment**
